Photographic retouching is a way of life for glossy magazines, we are constantly bombarded with perfected; and sometimes very over-perfected; images. Bizarre though this may sound, we think this is a bad thing, it gives a very blinkered view of what the people in the image really look like at 7am in the morning, in reality they look like everyone else 'not perfect'. Although we feel that it's a bad thing we also think that everyone should have the opportunity to look and feel great about themselves so we offer all our clients full makeover retouching.

We change nothing about the person, we just add a little 'digital makeup' here and there. Working in this way also reduces the need to have photographic makeup applied in large amounts thus reducing initial costs and the risks of damage to sensitive skin. Below we have compiled a few examples of a 'before and after' shot from our client Victoria (this 'retouching' page is thanks to Victoria insisting that we create it!)

You will note that we DO NOT use the most unflattering image we could possibly produce; or find; to demonstrate our before and after images, we use the original image and the final image only, we feel that 'before and after's' cannot be compared in any other way.

As with most images, this image began it's creation with lighting, three lights have been used in this shot with different modifiers to create the shadows and highlights. In post processing and retouching we have further enhanced and adjusted the lighting for drama and created the semi cartoon/comic superhero look. Retouching has removed the wires from our bespoke feather wings used as props and we have made skin tone and smoothness adjustments. The flames have been added to this image for a 'devil' look and to compliment the sister image to this one; the 'angel' look; both images can be found in Victoria's main gallery page.

Lighting effects can add an extra dimension to fairly ordinary looking originals, this effect could of course be created with studio lighting alone, but as we operate a mobile studio taking a large specialist screen set is highly impractical. An alternate film effect has been used in this retouch to add more drama and atmosphere to the shot, Victoria's lower thigh has had a mild correction to produce a flowing line and a very light skin softener has been applied.

This shot of Victoria's hand and thigh is an example of skin softening on a body area, although essentially the shot has been created with the original lighting and camera angle we have softened the skin and toned the image to a sepia tone to compliment the delicate lace of the garter, the blue 'colour picking' is a very subjective area of image editing but provided care is taken to select the correct image for this type of treatment then the end result will be pleasing for many years to come. The original image shows more about the level of detail the camera records than any perceived imperfections of Victoria's skin.
Victoria Victoria
Probably the most dramatic difference in images, as before the camera records every fine detail; be that a detail of perceived perfection or imperfection. This image has been given the full beauty treatment, from lighting enhancement to eye enhancement to skin smoothing and softening, you will note however that the 'final' image is still very much Victoria.
